For forty years I created sculptures, mostly from old tree roots in southern Africa. Having arrived in 2022 in Saskatoon, there were no old tree roots to be found and so I started to work with blocks of wood. It forced me to conceptualize my ideas without the inspiration of the natural forms of the trees. This way of working has been a new opportunity, as it is more structural and formal in it’s character.
Having arrived four months ago in New Brunswick I found to my surprise two wonderful old root pieces of Eastern White Cedar on the shore of the Saint John River and on Deer Island near St. Andrew’s. Once again I could lean on the natural forms of the roots that brought forth the life and rich history of those two trees, and at the same time gave me a chance to express my own inner experiences. It confirmed once again that there are no boundaries and nothing is separate from each other.
